I actually wrote the authors to thank them for courageously confronting the "Reading Wars" head on. Like many other educators, I have spent the last 20 years of my career investing my energies in best practices that are rooted in Balanced Literacy. I have also been confronting the science of reading. I feel like I am squarely in the middle of the two camps. I value instructional practices that emphasize meaning driven reading but I also have done my reading and understand the value of phonemic awareness and phonics. I have already begun making shifts toward increasing my attention to both within my reading groups. I love that the authors of this book understand the struggle to confront the research and to apply it to what we are currently doing. I love that this book addresses the research and makes it easy to understand. I especially love that the authors provide practical instructional practices that support shifts to our new thinking. If you are stuck somewhere in the middle of the Balanced Literacy and Science of Reading camps you will enjoy this book. Science of Reading followers (researchers, trainers, bloggers, Facebook group members) are passionate about their beliefs and sometimes their passion translates as downright nasty. It is hard to learn about Science of Reading research without feeling a bit assaulted. This book is like a warm blanket, comparatively speaking. You can learn about the research in a non-judgmental arena and make these personal and professional shifts at your own pace. We all want to do what is best for young readers. I love this book's attempt to bring us together for the sake of our students.
I ordered this book after reading Know Better, Do Better. Being a whole language trained teacher, the shift that was presented in that book was mind blowing and discouraging. I went looking for a book that could make sense of science-based in my balanced literacy world. I found it in this book, Shifting the Balance. This book is a very easy read! The many misunderstandings of reading are presented and then are carefully explained. This book is written so that is makes sense to teachers without a lot of scientific jargon. If your district is making the shift away from leveled readers and focusing more on the science like mine is, this book is what you need!
